What is Multispectral Imaging you ask?

Multispectral Imaging captures light across and range of wavelengths with the electromagnetic spectrum, including infrared and ultra-violet. This is commonly used in agriculture & forestry to identify plant species and plant health. It is also used to track soil conditions & biodiversity.

Say NO to Sediment Runoff

DID YOU KNOW that hydraulic mulch (hydroseeding) can reduce sediment runoff to almost nothing? No joke!

Broadcast seeding, erosion control blankets, and silt fences don't hold a candle to hydraulic mulch because of the staying power. Built in tackifier and fertilizer for quick germination paired with the water holding power of fiber mulch, makes this the ultimate solution for minimizing sediment runoff.

With tackifier in the hydromulch, soil is stabilized. Without that, sediment will detach and translocate, creating runoff and erosion.

What is Turbidity?

A measure of the level of particles (dirt, etc.) in a body of water.

And what is turbidity caused by? Sediment runoff! And why is it so bad?

Hinder visibility for animals to hunt prey
Decreases aquatic plants ability to photosynthesize
Reduces fish resistance to diseases
Alters egg and larval development
Smothers bottom dwelling insects, snails, worms, etc.

Spring Hydroseeding & More!

We know what you're thinking. Don't those hooligans usually wait 'til Fall to hydroseed? Nah. We hydroseed YEAR ROUND!

This job was completed mid-March in chilly spring temperatures.

Dormant seeding is done to stabilize the slopes along the roadway to prevent erosion and sediment runoff.

We can't wait to go back this summer and take some pictures of those beautiful, grassy ditches.

Pineview Vegetation Management is looking for seasonal, full-time workers who can integrate into a team, follow directions effectively, and loves to work outside.

In like a lamb out like a lion, am I right? Although we are finally seeing some of that fluffy white stuff around the Peace Region, it's not too soon to start thinking about Spring...and wildfires.

With record low precipitation levels through the winter, we need to start thinking about wildfire season again even if we don't want to.

Let us remind you why it's important your industrial site's vegetation is under control during a dry season.

Prep your sites for wildfire season:

Clear tall or dead vegetation from around infrastructure
Sufficient area around flare stacks & ignition sources should be free of vegetation
Clear vegetation away from power lines

Winter Construction & Erosion Control

Stabilization is the most important control measure, no matter what time of year it is. Keeping dirt in its place will prevent failure later on.

Consider these tips & tricks for lasting erosion

control through the winter:

Dormant Seeding: Using hydromulch & seed mixes to stabilize soil while the ground is frozen.
Identify Problem Areas: What areas will be subject to erosion during Spring run-off? Concentrate on those areas!
Soil Prep: Before winter seeding, be sure to prep your soil by rough grading or harrowing in order to guarantee success after seeding.

The Pineview team has been flat out hydroseeding all through November 2023!

There has always been a long standing debate about the use of glyphosate (RoundUp).

Here's some quick facts published by CropLife Canada :

Glyphosate has a lower toxicity than common items, including table salt, caffeine, vanilla, and vitamin D3.
Before any pesticide can be sold or used in Canada, it undergoes specific tests to evaluate the potential for it to cause human reproductive or developmental disorders.
160 regulatory agencies around the world agree glyphosate is safe when used according to label directions.

Hydroseeding in SUB ZERO temperatures? Yep. It works.

Dormant seeding is when hydroseed is applied in the late fall or early winter after the growing season is complete. The seed will lay dormant until spring then the seed takes advantage of all of the moisture from the snow melt and rain in order to germinate quickly.

We don't always have the perfect conditions.

We just make them ourselves.

Pipeline ROWs, steep slopes, streambanks, we do it all.

Sure, it's great to have a road leading right up to the jobsite,

Why Should We Care?

The Invasive Species Council of BC lays down some quick facts for us:

The global cost of tackling invasive species costs an estimated $1.4 trillion each year, 5% of the global economy , states the Global Invasive Species Programme (GISP).
Estimated crop losses in BC agriculture industry of over $50 million annually.
Invasive plants specifically displace native vegetation through competition for water, nutrients, and space.
Invasive plants impact human safety by obstructing sightlines and road signs.
Invasive plants impact human health by causing skin burns, dermatitis, and increased allergies

See that dark green blog on the top right? That's us. Good old BC Peace Region. So why do we have the most know invasive plants in the province? INDUSTRY . That's why.

Here's how industry is often responsible for the introduction and spread of invasive plant species:

Invasive plants hitch a ride through increased trade and travel, along transportation and utility corridors. All citizens and industries contribute to the problem, but improved management practices and awareness will help to reduce their spread.

What is Integrated Pest Management (IPM)?

IPM is a decision making process that includes identification and inventory of invasive plant populations, assessment of the risks that they pose, development of well-informed control options that may include a number of methods, site treatment, and monitoring.

This is why industry companies are required to have a Pesticide Management Plan and Confirmation Number .

HERBICIDES: How safe are they?

The most dreaded topic for us applicators. Mainly, because this is where we get a lot of responses that aren't always super kindly worded, you know?

BUT we're not afraid. And we're here to EDUCATE. So read on, friend.

The mode of action of herbicides is specific to plant enzymes and cells that are not present in animals or insects, including bees.

It's that 'F' word we all don't want to say, amiright? But we've got to face it- Fall is coming.

Here's a few priorities that should make your list:

Schedule that hydroseeding project before the snow flies
Finish up those reclamation sites, get those trees planted
Prep your lawn for winter

Hydroseeding is Sub Zero Temps?

Yes, it can be done.

In fact, we've hydroseeded at -17°C just last year.

Here's some quick facts:

Germination will only occur during the right conditions , so don't worry, the seeds are happy to just lay there awhile
Track-packed soil is ideal for seeding on frozen ground
One inch or less of snow & we're good to go!

DID YOU KNOW 'the best way to identify pioneer species is to look at areas of old disturbance near the site of your project?'. The plants growing on these sites will have the greatest chance of success as reclamation species.

Our outdoor nursery - Filled with 10+ native species including:

And Evergreens.

These willow plug trays are at 2 different growing stages and root establishment. Comparing side by side shows you which ones are most established and ready for planting.

In our outdoor nursery, our wide range of shrubs, deciduous, and evergreens make the perfect mix for reclamation projects within the Peace Region.

These little babies are Cottonwoods that have just germinated.

The seeds were harvested right here in Rose Prairie, BC.

It's amazing that these tiny starters can grow up to 100 FEET tall in their lifetime!

Bees & Herbicide Safety

But What About the Bees?

Are herbicides safe for bees? We've all wondered it.

Short Answer: YES!

The most common type of pesticides used in invasive species management are herbicides. The mode of action of herbicides is specific to plant enzymes and cells that are not present in animals or insects, including bees.

Herbicides:

Kill plants by disrupting or altering one or more metabolic processes, specific to plants
Have different modes of action, or ways that they kill plants, so not all herbicides will work on all plants

There are various current research efforts by Health Canada looking into toxicity, and indirect effects of herbicides on bee populations, however at present, there is insufficient evidence that herbicides are harmful to bee populations.

Why rooted live stakes?

Live stakes, most often used for reclamation or reforestation sites, commonly average about 2-4% establishment success.

However, live ROOTED stakes average about 70-80% establishment success. Because their roots have already been established, carefully pruned and monitored to root as deep as possible, these seedlings have a much higher success rate once planted.

Our greenhouse has a new babysitter. Meet our new CCS (Climate Control System). She monitors our greenhouse temperature, humidity, air movement and more.

It's more important than you think.

Native species is a trending hashtag in the vegetation world, amiright? There's a few reasons why.

Native plants are good for the environment

Native species require less care. Because they're adapted to the climate and local soil, they need less water, and can withstand weather conditions. Native plants are also a food source and habitat for local wildlife including native insects, pollinators, and others.

Native plants preserve local water sources

Because they are adapted to the region, native plant roots tend to run deeper than other plants. This helps maintain healthy soil and prevent erosion and sediment runoff.

Native plants prevent weed infestations

Native species can germinate rapidly because of their acclimation to the climate. Rapid growth and lasting establishment is the #1 way to prevent invasive species infestations.

Why rooted live stakes?

I mean, can't you just shove a stick in the ground and hope it grows? Give your revegetation project its best chance by choosing ROOTED live stakes.

Be Soil Smart

Your soil plays it smart. Do you?

Cation Exchange Capacity. Ever heard of it?

Let us explain. It's the soil's ability to absorb and use nutrients.

Consider your kitchen pantry . All those snacks need somewhere to go so they don't fall out of the cupboard. The higher the Cation Exchange Capacity in your soil, the more "cupboard space" is available to hold those nutrients. The more room, the more snacks...win, win, right?

Therefore, the higher your soil's nutrient holding capacity, the more nutrients for plants to use.

BUT...

If you added organic matter as well as nutrients but don't see a change in CEC, then the issue may be that the organic matter isn't being broken down properly.

Too much high carbon material (wood chips) added at once can make it difficult to breakdown. Try organic matter with better cation exchange levels (peat moss).

SO...Good news!

SAVE MONEY by considering your CEC along with adding soil amendments/topsoil to encourage lasting vegetation success. This means lower costs through reduced maintenance and fertilizer applications. Yay for money!

Riparian Areas & Other Buzzwords

Here's some trending buzzwords in our industry (vegetation management, just to clarify):

Riparian Areas: The biologically distinct area that borders a waterfront/shoreline. Here, there are rich soils, specific vegetation, and a lot of things to consider when addressing erosion control. Learn more about riparian area management here .

Biotic Soil Media: Engineered soil that contains recycled, biodegradable fibers, biostimulants, biological inoculants, and other nutritive additives. Sometimes, known as 'Soil Amendments.'

Freshet: Okay, so this is one of those words that if you say it too many times, it sounds weird. We think it's an overcomplicated, fancy enviro word, and it literally means "Spring Runoff." Bet that'll save a few of you at the next tailgate meeting.

Industry Knowledge: AKA Knowing how to do our jobs. You might be a Prime Contractor overseeing a mega-project, but it doesn't mean you know how to hydroseed. Let's respect our industries & trust the experts in their fields.

Consider why your last reclamation project revegetation failed. Where did you source your seeds and trees?

For more rapid re-establishment & control, native understory plant species are grown alongside planted trees and shrubs with 2 objectives:

to establish early cover to reduce growth of undesirable species
to improve the site’s chances of achieving return to forest cover

So all this to say: Roommates Wanted- native species & companion planting are keys to success. Can we post that on Craig's List?

Companion Planting

Companion plant species must be carefully selected.

Companion planting increases the densities of native species on reclamation sites, thus improving progress toward multiple reclamation targets--woody & herbaceous species.

Ultimately, companion planting will be most effective as part of an integrated management plan that incorporates mechanical, chemical and/or other controls.

Monitoring is necessary to evaluate whether follow-up treatment and/or planting is needed to meet reclamation targets.

What's the deal with Black Knot?

You might have been seeing this around your city. It's ugly & spreading fast!

Black knot is a widespread fungal disease that attacks both fruiting and ornamental trees. Once established, black knot is easily identified with its hard, uneven, black galls that seem to enwrap twigs and branches.

The disease cycle starts when spores are released from established knots where the fungus overwinters, during damp spring conditions. The spores travel and form small, olive-colored swellings over the first season.

By the second year, the growing infection begins releasing its own spores as it swells into the dark, easy-to-spot warty black fungus that coils along stems and branches.

How do we stop it?!

PRUNING.

Our first & best line of defense. After a careful winter or spring inspection, all knots should be removed and carefully disposed of. Constant monitoring over the summer season is required, and all infected branches should be removed.
This might not save your tree, BUT it will prolong its life. Black Knot is unkind, nasty, and worst of all, ugly.

Spring Lawn Care Tips

Bare Spots?

Seed these spots with perennial rye grass mix (best for NEBC) as soon as the snow is gone. The sooner you seed, the sooner it grows. Spring moisture can help jump start germination.

Not Growing?

Fertilize! But be careful: too much fertilizer can burn off your grass or wash off from rain. Be sure to follow manufacturer instructions.

Hard Ground?

It's time to aerate! Aeration promotes deeper roots in areas with dry, hard, compact soil. It rejuvenates root growth and jumpstarts the spread of new roots.

What's the Point of Revegetation?

Canada Thistle is the #1 weed targeted by farmers in Western Canada.

For years, scientists and farmers have tried to find a way to stop the spread. Here’s why:

- Canada Thistle root systems can grow into the ground up to 10ft deep!
- Their lateral roots can grow up to 20ft long
- Up to 5,000 seeds can come from just one emerged plant
- Those seeds can germinate even 20 years later. TWENTY years!

Crop Loss:

Farmers have recorded up to 70% crop loss in one year because of this nasty invasive weed. And tillage only makes it worse!

How Safe Are Herbicides?

The gossip and myths surrounding herbicides give off the wrong impression. At Pineview, safety is #1. Always. So why would we use products that put us in danger? Silly question.

So when you see us on your work sites without a hazmat suit on, it’s because we don’t need one :) We have to use these chemicals everyday–why risk it?

This table really puts it in perspective.

The LD50 (the lower amount of mg/kg, the more dangerous the toxic agent is) of gasoline is 80x more toxic than the 3 main herbicides Pineview is spraying on your work site. EIGHTY times. Ever think about gloving up at the gas station?

Fiber Filtration Tubes

As dirty as it sounds…in a completely different way

Leave the bran behind because this fiber filtration system is all you need to get your project back on schedule.

Replace those silt fences with something that will stay put and make those slopes and ditches safer and cleaner. Not only do these FFTs treat and filter run-off water, but they also provide slope interruption and sediment control.

Win. Win. Win.

What it shouldn’t look like…

Don’t let it catch you by surprise. Silt fencing is not known for its strength or filtration. It’s more often found laying on the ground instead of controlling the sediment and run-off compromising your project before you’re even finished.

What it should…

Evenly spaced FFTs are important. On slopes, they filter the run-off, trapping sediment and other objects. It also complements turf reinforcement mats and erosion blankets to keep the dirt where it’s supposed to be.

Terra-Tubes, an FFT designed by Profile Products, optimizes flow, filtration, and flocculation to ensure good filtration and sediment control. Flocculation is when particles of clay react to a substance (like salt water) and aggregate, forming large clumps that are easily caught in the filter.

Wildfire Season is Here

Why Vegetation Management Matters

Bare ground around work sites is critical. Clearing vegetation to create fire breaks starves a fire of fuel and can greatly increase chances of containment. Herbicide application and brush removal are types of vegetation management that help prevent wildfires from spreading and causing more damage to properties and the environment.

Be Prepared:

Brush Removal

Mowing or mulching around worksites creates a firebreak. This limits fuel, like underlying brush, short willows, and dry grass, from spreading the wildfire and increasing its intensity. Well maintained pipelines, right-of-ways, and roadsides can also act as firebreaks.
